This February, let’s raise awareness for AMD
Did you know?
AMD is a leading cause of severe vision impairment, expected to affect around 288 million people worldwide by 2040? Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive retinal disorder that impacts the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision.
Age is a significant risk
As we age, the risk of AMD increases significantly. Annual incidence rates range from 0.3 per 1000 in individuals aged 55-59 to 36.7 per 1000 in those aged 90 or older. Genetics play a substantial role, contributing to about 71% of the risk, while cigarette smoking and lower physical activity levels are reported as environmental factors.
Recognize the signs
Recognizing the early signs of AMD is crucial. Patients may face challenges in low-light conditions and low-contrast surroundings. Visual distortion, blurred vision, and difficulty focusing are common symptoms. Notably, having good vision in one eye may mask symptoms in the other eye.
Treat appropriately
Nutritional supplements, including vitamins and trace elements, may slow AMD progression, especially for those in intermediate or late-stage AMD. Anti-VEGF biological treatments, delivered through intravitreal injection, serve as a primary therapy for treating neovascular AMD.
Promoting awareness of AMD symptoms is vital for prompt referral to eye care specialists. Timely treatment is essential, as delays have been linked to visual loss.
Let's spread awareness about AMD and ensure that those at risk seek timely care for healthier vision!
