PTSD Awareness Month

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a potentially disabling mental health condition with far ranging consequences including physical health problems, social impairment, and psychological sequelae such as increased suicidality. Studies suggest a significant gender disparity, with PTSD rates estimated to be 1.5 to 5 times higher in women compared to men. Girls and women encounter various forms of sexual assault more frequently, whereas men are more commonly subjected to violent traumas, such as those experienced in combat situations. Understanding and addressing sex and gender differences in PTSD is crucial for developing more effective, personalized treatment approaches. More research on sex-specific responses to clinical interventions and pharmacological treatments is needed.
