Bringing the IBD journey to Life for Kids
Educational Storytelling for Pediatric Patients

Educational Storytelling for Pediatric Patients
The client
A pharma client committed to education around inflammatory bowel disease wanted to add value to pediatric patients through an interactive storybook.
The challenge
How to create a story about Crohn’s and Colitis that children with IBD could relate to and understand to normalize their experiences and explain it to their friends.
What we did
We created a central character named Ollie, who narrates the story and explains in simple terms, when children with IBD get sick, they need special treatment, rest, sometimes infusions and sometimes the hospital. Their friends may need to adjust activities around them for a while, but once they feel better, they can carry on life and play as normal. We also explained that on the outside they may look fine or a little pale (anemia) or a little thin (lack of absorption) but that the disease is actually inside the body. We then worked with an illustrator to bring Ollie to life and brought colorful characters and friends into each setting.
The outcome
The response from the pediatricians was overwhelmingly positive
Both parents and children related so well to the storybook, creating an educational touchpoint, and an emotive message.
This resulted in positive feedback, acknowledgement of educational added value and Increased company relationship building with pediatricians.
